CV Joint FAQ

The primary warning sign is a distinct, rhythmic clicking or popping noise that increases in volume when turning the handlebars or steering wheel. Other signs include severe steering wheel vibration under acceleration, visible grease splattered all over the inside of the wheel rim, or a torn rubber boot upon visual inspection.
If you catch the tear immediately and the grease inside remains completely clean and free of grit, you can thoroughly clean the joint and replace just the boot. However, if the joint has been clicking or running through mud and sand with a torn boot, the internal precision bearings are already compromised and the entire joint must be replaced.
Suspension lift kits physically push the wheel hubs further down away from the differential, forcing the axle bars to operate at much steeper operating angles.
