When swapping out an off-road universal joint, mark and index the separate sections of the driveshaft to guarantee the yolks are matched back together perfectly in phase; misaligned yokes induce violent rotational imbalances. Secure the driveshaft assembly in a bench vise and remove the internal or external retaining snap rings using precision pliers. Employ a specialized u-joint press tool or a hydraulic press with a receiving cup to carefully slide the old bearing caps out of the yoke eyes, avoiding heavy hammer impacts that can bend the steel yoke tabs out of square alignment. Thoroughly clean the inner yoke loops, checking for burrs or stretching.
